Best Law Firm Mentor Finalist 2026: Matthew Green

May 18, 2026

Matthew Green, Deputy Chair of Obermayer’s Litigation Department and a member of the firm’s Management Committee, recently reflected on his career journey and the value of mentorship in an interview with The Legal Intelligencer, published May 18, 2026. A finalist in The Legal Intelligencer’s 2026 Pennsylvania Legal Awards in the Best Law Firm Mentors category, Matthew credited the generous mentors who helped shape his professional path.

“And even now, decades into my practice, I continue to learn from Thomas Leonard and Mathieu Shapiro. Their guidance reminds me that mentorship isn’t something you outgrow—it’s something that evolves with you.”

In the interview, Matthew described mentorship as an evolving and highly individualized process, emphasizing the importance of building authentic connections with young attorneys rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.

“Every new attorney arrives with a different mix of strengths, insecurities, ambitions, and blind spots. My job as a mentor is to understand who they are before I try to shape who they can become.”

Matthew also encouraged young lawyers to take an active role in shaping their careers instead of waiting for opportunities to appear.

“A good mentor won’t hand you a roadmap, but they will help you develop the instincts and confidence to create your own,” Matthew said.
