Diversity and Inclusion

We are proud of our tradition of fostering cultures and places where individual diversity is not only valued, but celebrated.

Obermayer has long promoted diversity and inclusion, both within the firm and throughout the communities where we live and work. We are proud of our tradition of fostering cultures and places where individual diversity is not only valued, but celebrated and we are committed to continue to do everything possible to build the best environment for our employees.

While many of our initiatives promote a diverse workforce for our firm, we recognize that our commitment doesn’t stop at our door. We serve and benefit our local communities and civic organizations through our various sponsorships and our association with affinity groups.

Obermayer’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee (D&I Committee) includes lawyers from across the firm’s departments, members of the hiring committee, and members of the senior management team. The committee develops and implements firm-wide initiatives to attract, retain, and advance the careers of our talented diverse lawyers. It nurtures an inclusive working environment and ensures that our lawyers and staff have the opportunity, training, and mentorship to thrive personally and professionally.

To ensure that we attract diverse attorneys, Obermayer is a member of the Philadelphia Diversity Law Group (PDLG), a nonprofit group that provides resources and summer internship opportunities to diverse law students. In past years, Obermayer has hired summer interns through the PDLG program and we are proud that in 2019, all three of our summer associates were hired through the PDLG program. We also proudly sponsor the Mid-Atlantic Black Law Students Association (MABLSA) Annual Convention and our attorneys participate as volunteer judges in MABLSA’s mock trial competitions.

In addition to the hiring of our summer interns, the D&I Committee has implemented a hiring program which specifically targets practicing attorneys with diverse backgrounds by leveraging Obermayer’s internal and external diversity network.

So that we continue to grow and develop our current attorneys, we are in the process of updating our Associate Mentorship Program to provide more resources for diverse associates. The subcommittee charged with this mission includes leaders from Obermayer’s Management Committee, D&I Committee, OWN, and Associate’s Committee. One of the primary goals of the subcommittee is to increase the retention rate of diverse attorneys at Obermayer. As a supplement to the associate mentorship program, Obermayer is in the process of implementing programs at the firm that reinforce our commitment to diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
