Tom Wyatt Quoted in MLex on Pennsylvania’s Push to Lower Utility Bills

Tom Wyatt, Chair of Obermayer’s Municipal Infrastructure and Services Practice Group, was featured in the May 29, 2026, MLex article, American Water-Essential deal threatened by Pa. push to lower utility bills. The article examines how growing political pressure in Pennsylvania to lower utility costs, including proposed legislation and Governor Josh Shapiro’s criticism of the state’s utility model, could complicate American Water Works’ proposed acquisition of Essential Utilities by increasing regulatory scrutiny.

Tom Wyatt, who represents municipalities, described efforts to lower utility costs as an “all-hands-on-deck moment” that he hopes doesn’t turn into a political hot potato.

“I’m hopeful this is a sincere effort to drive value to consumer pocketbooks, but not push investors and problem solvers out of the commonwealth,” Tom said in an interview. “The core question is: How do you ensure the utility monopoly isn’t taking advantage of its customers, while ensuring access to capital?”
