- Robert I Whitelaw

Bob has been one of Philadelphia’s leading divorce attorneys for over four decades, representing clients in the Philadelphia area, the Main Line, Montgomery, Delaware, Bucks and Chester counties and throughout Pennsylvania. He was the firm’s managing partner for 30 years and was a member of the firm’s management committee until 2021.

Bob has extensive experience in divorce and child custody matters as well as matrimonial and family law issues. He handles all aspects of domestic relations including division of property, alimony, tax matters, custody, visitation and support, prenuptial agreements, paternity, matrimonial litigation and negotiation, complicated marital estates and other domestic relations issues.

Bob is an experienced advisor and litigator in partnership and corporate matters with respect to formation, succession and dissolution. He also has a comprehensive background in probate, fiduciary and administration of estates.

In his free time, Bob is an avid cyclist, averaging between 100 to 200 miles per week. He also is an omnivorous reader and an inveterate traveler, preferring to visit places that are off the beaten track.

Bob has successfully handled numerous high profile, high net worth divorce cases involving hundreds of millions of dollars. With a reputation for being direct and honest, Bob understands that clients want to get from Point A, where they are at the start of a divorce proceeding, to Point B, where they want to be once the proceeding is concluded. He uses his extensive experience in matrimonial and family law to successfully guide his clients to that Point B.

Bob has successfully argued a number of cases before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and Superior Court that have set lasting precedents, including the validity of a prenuptial agreement in Pennsylvania and the principle that equitable distribution applies to liabilities, as well as assets.

Bob is a fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. He is also a member of the Family Law, Litigation and Probate sections of the American, Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Bar Associations. He served as President, Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and is a former Vice President (July 2008-July 2011) and Secretary (July 2007-July 2008).

In civic life, Bob is a former Chairman of the Board, Prince Music Theater; Trustee, Anna Vincent Scholarship Trust; arbitrator, the American Arbitration Association; instructor, Main Line Paralegal Institute; author and lecturer, Pennsylvania Bar Institute; lecturer, Dickinson Law Forum; member, board of directors, Big Brothers and Sisters of Philadelphia (President 1996-98) and panel member of the Disciplinary Board of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania.

Bob has been named in Best Lawyers in America© from 1995 to the present and was named as the “Philadelphia Best Lawyers Family Lawyer of the Year” for 2010. He has consistently been named as one of the “Ten Leaders of Greater Philadelphia Matrimonial and Divorce Law” (2005-present). He is named to the Pennsylvania Super Lawyers® list as seen in both Philadelphia magazine and Pennsylvania Super Lawyers magazine (2004-2022). He is also listed as one of the Top 100 Philadelphia attorneys and Top 100 Pennsylvania attorneys (2004-2007).
