Melissa Atkins Continues the Discussion on the UAW Strike in an Interview with Scripps News

Obermayer labor and employment partner Melissa Atkins was interviewed by Scripps News on October 6, 2023, where she continued the discussion on the United Auto Workers (UAW) union strike and the ongoing negotiations. All of Detroit’s big 3 Ford, GM, and Stellantis have presented multiple offers with Ford announcing it offered nearly a 30% pay increase for the life of a contract Reuters. Uaw President Shawn Fain also shared a big win for the union. He said GM has agreed to put its EV battery plant workers under the union’s master agreement. GM has said it last 200 million dollars in the first 2 weeks of the strike and according to Melissa, it’s only going to get worse as the strike continues. 

They’re going to continue to have to lay off people. They’re going to continue not to have individuals to make the parts…Consumer car prices are going to go up and, they have no choice but to play into the demands that at some point,” said Melissa.
