“I’m an engineer who became a lawyer, and I make complicated things understandable. Clients don’t need a lecture on the law; they need to understand their options, costs, and trade-offs. I explain them in plain English, then help them choose a practical path to the result they want.”
Steve is an intellectual property attorney who helps businesses protect, leverage, and defend their brands, creative works, and technology. A registered patent attorney with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, he advises clients on trademarks, copyrights, patent infringement and defense, intellectual property transactions, and IP disputes and litigation. He takes a practical, business-focused approach, helping clients identify valuable IP assets and develop strategies aligned with their goals and budgets.
Steve’s technical experience spans computer hardware and displays, wireless communications, software, propulsion systems, engine components, action sports equipment, medical and biomedical devices, and HVAC systems. With a background in engineering, he understands complex technologies and excels at translating complicated legal and technical issues into plain English.
Before practicing law, Steve worked as an engineer on hazardous-waste remediation projects and nuclear facilities and helped develop pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities. He was drawn to intellectual property law by the intersection of technology, creativity, and the law, and the opportunity to help people turn ideas into valuable business assets.
Outside the office, Steve is an avid reader, fiction writer, runner, cyclist, and photographer with a particular interest in wildlife and landscapes. He enjoys spending summers at the Jersey Shore with his family and hiking in the Adirondacks. Originally from Buffalo and Rochester, New York, he remains a devoted Buffalo Bills fan.
Steve has tried and argued patent cases, examined witnesses, argued motions during trial, and prepared appellate briefs to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit on behalf of both appellants and appellees. He drafts and negotiates technology licenses, IP assignments, and agreements involving sales, mergers, acquisitions, and litigation settlements.
His leadership experience includes serving as General Counsel and Head of IP for a telecommunications and fintech identity-security company, overseeing contracts, corporate governance, privacy, compliance, and its intellectual property portfolio. He also spent more than a decade as Chief IP Officer of an international IP services company, developing systems and expert teams to manage large corporate patent portfolios.
Steve brings deep technical expertise across computer hardware and displays, software, wireless devices and networks, engines and propulsion systems, medical and biomedical devices, HVAC, and action-sports equipment.
Steve chaired the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Patent Law Committee from 2016 to 2020 and was recognized by Pennsylvania Super Lawyers from 2013 to 2018 and in 2020.
Steve has taught at Temple University and Drexel University, guest-lectured at the University of Pennsylvania Law School and at Rutgers, and presented on U.S. patent practice in Japan and India. A regular continuing legal education speaker, he has published on copyright, patents, and USPTO practice in Patently-O and the Philadelphia Business Journal and has maintained a long-running intellectual property blog.
Steve also contributes to his community through pro bono service, representing children in Philadelphia Family Court proceedings and serving as guardian ad litem for dependent children.
