“The thing I most enjoy about being an attorney is having the opportunity to apply my talents and skills in the service of others.”
With more than 40 years of experience, Kurt brings a thorough understanding of the complex legal issues that businesses and professionals face.
Kurt vigorously defends claims made against his clients or prosecutes claims they have against others. In both cases, his goal is the same – to serve and maximize his client’s interests and rights. An experienced litigator, Kurt offers a full range of services from the initial pleadings through discovery, and a full range of appellate services if desired.
When it comes to his clients’ business and commercial undertakings, Kurt’s goal is to maximize their rights and interests, whether that involves proactive business planning to effectuate a client’s wishes or, when problems occur, to efficiently manage dispute resolution to avoid litigation and achieve cost-effective solutions.
In his free time, Kurt enjoys spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He is an avid sportsman, who enjoys competitive and recreational tennis, golf, and platform tennis. He is a passionate fan of the Philadelphia Phillies, Eagles, and 76ers. Kurt is also an art collector, with a fondness for the Pennsylvania Impressionists, as well as a music lover who regularly attends jazz, blues, and classic rock concerts.
Kurt focuses his practice in the areas of corporate and commercial litigation, medical device litigation, environmental torts & products liability litigation, and the defense of professional liability claims. He also provides corporate and regulatory compliance counseling, particularly to health care companies and closely held businesses.
Kurt has tried multiple cases to successful verdicts for his clients in the state and federal courts of eastern Pennsylvania, and argued many cases in different state and federal appellate courts, including the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.
In one particular case involving the medical device field, Kurt represented a physician who had the first American patent on a particular surgical device, but who neglected to obtain product liability insurance for use of his invention by others. This client eventually came to be named as a defendant in approximately one thousand filed cases. Through Kurt’s efforts, all of the cases against his client were dismissed without any settlement. The client was able to litigate and vindicate the safety of his invention, without having to declare bankruptcy and, at the same time, maintain his practice, helping patients who greatly needed his medical and surgical services.
Kurt graduated with highest honors in Government, from the College of William and Mary, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He graduated cum laude from the Villanova University School of Law, where he was a member of the Law Review and the Order of the Coif.
Before joining Obermayer in 1997, Kurt clerked on the Superior Court of Pennsylvania, and then practiced at several mid-size and large law firms in Philadelphia. He is a member of the bar of the United States Supreme Court.
Kurt serves on the House Committee of the Philadelphia Cricket Club. Together with his wife, he is a steward of a community park, donating and planting trees, shrubs, flowers and creating a 9/11 memorial garden.
