Marvin S. Lieber is a partner in the Pittsburgh office of Obermayer Rebmann Maxwell & Hippel LLP. He is a member of the firm’s Health Care Practice Group and the Business and Finance Department.
Mr. Lieber has a broad-based legal practice, with an emphasis on business and commercial law, taxation, charitable organizations, educational institutions and health care representation. He has represented homes for the aging in Allegheny County and other counties throughout the state, major national HMOs, universities and colleges and numerous social service agencies, including a $40 million drug and alcohol agency. He has represented hospitals in mergers and acquisitions, as well as charities in litigation with parent organizations over severance of their relationships and distribution of assets. He has also performed pre-audits and settled Medicare and Medicaid audits for hospitals.
Mr. Lieber received his Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Pittsburgh and his Juris Doctor from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. He is also a graduate of the Harvard Graduate School of Business (OPM ’90). His military service includes captain in the United States Air Force.
Mr. Lieber was a member of the board of trustees for the University of Pittsburgh, Mount Aloysius College and the United Way of Pittsburgh. He was President of the Pennsylvania Bar Association. He also has been Secretary of the Board of Continuing Legal Education of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. Mr. Lieber has been president of the Pennsylvania Bar Institute and the Pennsylvania Bar Foundation, and is a fellow with the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel.
He was a member of the board of directors of the Pittsburgh Opera, the Pittsburgh Symphony Society and the Pittsburgh Pastoral Institute. He was previously chairman of the Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Jewish Committee.
Mr. Lieber is a prolific writer and lecturer on taxation, estate planning and general business law topics, and has been listed in Who’s Who in the World and Best Lawyers in America. He is co-author of the book, Buying and Selling a Business, published in 1999, 2003 and 2009, and author of Buy/Sell Agreements, Kleinrock Tax Library 2000. He has also authored the article “Estate Tax: A Dilemma without a Congressional Solution” (The Pennsylvania Lawyer, March/April 2010).
Mr. Lieber is named as one of Pennsylvania’s “Super Lawyers” as listed in both the Philadelphia magazine (June 2007 & June 2004-2006) and the Law and Politics Magazine, “Pennsylvania Super Lawyers 2007” and 2004-2006 editions.
Mr. Lieber is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia. He is admitted to the Tax Court of the United States, the U.S. Court of Claims, the U.S. District Courts for the Western District of Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third District, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court.
