Alice Sacks Johnston is a partner who practices in both the Pittsburgh and Philadelphia offices of Obermayer Rebmann Maxwell & Hippel LLP.  She is a member of the firm’s Litigation Department. In 2005, Alice was selected as a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer.

Ms. Johnston presently serves as Pennsylvania Statewide Counsel to two major automakers in the defense of their asbestos cases throughout the state.

Her experience has encompassed many complex matters, including construction, securities litigation; pharmaceutical and medical device litigation; statewide occupational safety and health (OSHA) cases relating to back injuries among nursing staff; and contract, real estate, products liability and insurance disputes. She also has practiced in the areas of trademark infringement, fraud, Racketeer-Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO), and other areas of business and commercial litigation.

Ms. Johnston has been involved in the national defense of a medical device company in mass tort litigation involving multidistrict litigation proceedings and related state court cases throughout the United States. This involved hundreds of products liability cases with cutting-edge medical, scientific and legal issues, the creation and maintenance of a sophisticated electronic database containing more than a million pages of documents, and careful supervision and coordination of strategy and defense efforts among a large and geographically diverse defense team.

During her career, she has made appearances before state and federal courts, the National Association of Securities Dealers, the American Arbitration Association, and the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.

Active in local bar organizations, she is the past chair of the Allegheny County Bar Association Court Rules Committee and a past member of the Civil Litigation Section Council and the Federal Court Section Council. She has been a court appointed member of the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas Court Rules Committee and a past Barrister of the American Inns of Court, Pittsburgh Chapter. She has also been commended for service as a court appointee to the Third Circuit Task Force On Counsel for Indigent Litigants in civil cases.

Ms. Johnston is a frequent speaker and has lectured and written on legal topics including liability for over-promotion of pharmaceutical products, “inadvertent addiction” and obesity litigation, as well as on topics including work-life balance and part-time work options for attorneys.

She is also a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the Defense Research Institute. She is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania, the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Pennsylvania, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
